Ways to Overcome Your Fear of the Dentist

452172511For many people, fear of the dentist is a very real thing. It can cause great anxiety and apprehension even if it is for a routine check up or cleaning. Some people dread their upcoming dentist appointment for weeks. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Here are some things that you can do to overcome the fear of going to the dentist:

1. Remind yourself that dental procedures and treatments have greatly improved in the last few years. These days, dentists are much more focused on their patients’ comfort.

2. Take the time to discuss your fears with your dentist. Not only will this alert your dentist of your anxiety, but it will also help him or her in addressing those fears. When a dentist is aware that a patient is anxious about being there, they can take extra steps to ensure that the patient feels comfortable.

3. Be sure to find a dentist that you feel comfortable with. Not all dentists are the same and you may find that a certain dentist helps you feel more at ease when you visit. It never hurts to develop a good relationship with your dentist. By building a friendship you can help yourself feel more comfortable going to the dentist.

4. Remember that you don’t have to do everything all at once. If it helps you feel more comfortable, talk to your dentist about doing several short visits instead of a few long visits. Your dentist may be able to spread the work out over several different appointments, which may help you to relax.

5. Have your dentist explain the procedure before hand. Often just knowing what is going to happen can make a difference in the level of anxiety. Some people prefer that the dentist talk them through step-by-step as the procedure is being performed.

6. Practice relaxation techniques before and during your dentist appointment. This may include deep breathing or even meditation. Listening to relaxing music or scheduling your appointments at a less stressful time of day can make a difference as well.

7. It may help to visit your dentist office and meet the staff before your first appointment. Even just a simple 5 to 10 minute meeting can help you feel more at ease. This will also give you a chance to decide if this is the right dentist for you.
