Signs You Need a New Dentist

181396656Is your dentist giving you their best? Are they addressing the correct issue and reviewing the available options? Do they give you a hard time when you ask for a second opinion?

These are just some of the questions you might want to ask yourself if you suspect that you might need a new dentist. Most of us would prefer to keep on working with the same dentist we always have. However, situations do sometimes arise that make you wonder if you are seeing the right dentist for you.

Here are some important things to consider if you are thinking about changing dentists:

  1. Before you get started with any type of treatment or examination, your dentist should discuss your full medical history with you. Believe it or not, there are other things going on in the body that can directly impact your oral health. If a patient has a specific condition or is taking medication, the dentist should find out by asking questions. If your dentist skips this important step, it should send up a red flag and you may want to consider a different dentist.
  2. When you go to see your dentist regarding a specific issue, make sure they actually address that issue. Anytime a dentist skims over your problem without doing a thorough exam, there is a problem. Your dentist should be listening closely to your concern, examine your mouth to diagnose the problem, and discuss possible treatments with you. In some cases, your concern may not be a big deal, but your dentist should still take it seriously.
  3. You may have already had quite a bit of dental work completed by another dentist before going to your current dentist. If your new dentist is constantly talking about re-doing the work of your first dentist, you may want to find someone else.
  4. As with most things in life, it is sometimes good to get a second opinion. There is no difference with dentists. If your dentist recommends a specific procedure and then gives you a hard time when you say you want to get a second opinion, there may be an issue. Good dentists will understand that a second opinion is sometimes necessary and will stand by their original diagnosis.
