How to Get Your Child Excited About the Dentist

177347848Parents know how tough it can be to get kids to go to the dentist, let alone be excited about it. We are the first to admit that going to the dentist can sometimes be a little intimidating. It even causes anxiety in many adults. At the same time, if we can teach our kids early on the importance of keeping a healthy mouth that includes regular visits to the dentist, they are much less likely to face serious dental issues down the road.

So what can you do as a parent to get your kids excited about the dentist? Here are a few ideas that we believe can make a difference:

Honest Communication

Some parents try the strategy of keeping the visit to the dentist a secret until the last possible moment. The idea is that you prevent the buildup of anxiety, which is often the worst part. While this may work initially, it is definitely not a good long-term strategy. It could actually make things worse because your kids will pick up on the fact that there is something scary about going to the dentist. Besides, kids have this remarkable ability to unleash all of the anxiety they might have slowly exhibited over the days leading up to a dentist appointment all at once in the waiting room. This is never fun for anyone.

Develop a Relationship with Your Dentist

The more familiar your kids are with their dentist, the more comfortable and excited they will be to see them. Instead of telling your child that they have an appointment with the dentist, try saying something like, “You get to go visit Dr. Rouhani next week and show him what a great job you have been doing with brushing your teeth!” It might be worth taking the time to get your children acquainted with the office staff as well so they see familiar faces each time they visit the dentist.

Encourage Healthy Dental Care

Children who can come in for a routine check-up and hear nothing but positive comments from a dentist are much more likely to be excited to go back again. To ensure this happens, it is very important that you help your child develop and practice great brushing and flossing habits. Watch what they eat and drink and talk to them about keeping their teeth healthy.

Teach By Example

Perhaps the best way to get your kids excited about going to the dentist is to set the right example for them. When you talk about how much you dread going to the dentist, you can be sure your kids will dread it too. Instead, make comments about how excited you are to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy.
