Electric Toothbrushes – Why They’re Better

Electric ToothbrushIt seems that more and more people are saying goodbye to traditional toothbrushes and making the switch to an electric one, and for very good reasons too. Simply put, there are some key advantages that are hard to overlook in using an electric toothbrush over a traditional one. Electric toothbrushes have shown to do a better job of removing plaque, they provide better brushing action, and many people just find them more enjoyable to use.

A More Thorough Cleaning

Even dentists are now standing behind electric toothbrushes, endorsing them for the fact that they provide their patient’s with a cleaner mouth. Not only do the spinning brushes remove plaque better, but they also make it easier for the brusher to reach the tough spots in their mouth that they could not reach with a traditional toothbrush.

In a recent survey of over 16,000 people, 80% said they were able to improve their overall oral cleanliness by simply switching to an electric toothbrush.

Less Harmful on the Gums

Before they switched to electric toothbrushes, most people were probably unaware that they were using their traditional toothbrush the wrong way. By brushing too hard, they were actually causing damage to their gums and removing enamel from the surface of their teeth. Electric toothbrushes alleviate that problem because they do the hard work for you. You do not have to apply pressure when using an electric toothbrush, which means you are less likely to cause damage to your gums.

Built in Timers

One of the biggest issues Americans face when it comes to brushing their teeth is actually doing it for the appropriate amount of time. We do not often bring a timer with us to the bathroom sink to make sure we are brushing long enough. Many of today’s electric toothbrushes come with built in timers that let us know exactly how long we should be brushing.

More Convenient

Most people simply find an electric toothbrush much more convenient to use than a traditional one. They like the peace of mind they get from knowing that their teeth are cleaner and their gums are healthier. Dentists and experts agree that if electric toothbrushes are keeping people more engaged by brushing more often, then they are just fine with the transition.

Here at Smile Concepts, we have witnessed first hand how an electric toothbrush can make a significant difference. I can tell almost instantly when I look in a patient’s mouth whether or not they are using an electric toothbrush. I realize that not everyone is going to make that transition, but I am definitely supportive when they do.
