How Often Should You Replace Your Toothbrush

187095521Hopefully everyone is seeing his or her toothbrush at least twice every day. You would think that when it is something we look at so frequently we would be able to easily tell if it is worn out or needs to be replaced. The problem with toothbrushes is, it is what we can’t see with our eyes that is the most telling sign that is time to look for a new one.

Microscopic viruses and bacteria can live on a toothbrush surface for weeks, continuing to thrive and breed. Fortunately, these germs are not overly harmful to us or our teeth, especially when we use toothpaste, which has an anti-germ component built into it.

Keep Your Toothbrushes Clean

One important step in taking proper care of your teeth is to make sure you are keeping your toothbrush clean. This includes rinsing it thoroughly after use and allowing it to dry. Experts recommend that we store our toothbrushes in an upright position between uses.

Interestingly, research shows that, contrary to popular belief and even logic, storing your toothbrush close to someone else’s is not as risky as we might think. While germs are definitely airborne, studies show there is very little transition of germs from one toothbrush to the next.

Although it is not necessary, some people even go to the extremes of soaking their toothbrushes in solutions such as alcohol and mouthwash to kill germs. Dipping a toothbrush into boiling water for 10 seconds is another strategy to keep germs away.

When is it Time for a Replacement?

According to the American Dental Association, we should all be replacing our toothbrush (or the brush head if we use an electric toothbrush) every 3 months. This has less to do with germs and more about the wearing out of the bristles. In fact, some bristles may wear out faster than others depending on how heavily a person brushes.

Generally speaking, it is not so much about the amount of time that has gone by since you last replaced your toothbrush, but more about the condition of the bristles on the brush. Keep an eye on the direction the bristles point. If they are pointing in different directions, it is probably time to look for a replacement.

Parents should also watch their children’s toothbrushes for worn out bristles, as well. Since most dentists typically recommend softer bristles for children’s toothbrushes, they have a tendency to wear out sooner.
